I believe that the committee will consider our suggestion. “How long can I keep the book ?”Harry asked. Dr. Bethune set us a good example. Crude oil contains many useful substances.
The meeting will be held in the afternoon. It happened in June 1932. My watch stopped. She spoke at the meeting yesterday evening. Shall I begin at once?我可以立刻开始吗?(begin作不及物动词) She began working as a librarian after she left school. (began作及物动词) When did they leave Chicago? Wash your hands before meals. Does this cloth wash well? They treated us with kindness. They treat me with respect. Don’t treat me as [like] a child. /Don’t treat me as ifI were a child. Which doctor is treating her? He is being treated with a new drug. 注:表示“治愈”的结果,要用动词 cure(参见 cure)。 3. The article treats (of) an important subject. He treated me to the theatre. He treated each of the children to an ice-cream. I decided to treat myself a taxi. 如: It’s my treat. I can’t understand treating children like that. 误:I can’t understand to treat children like that. I quite understand that you need a change. 正:I quite understand your needing a change. I can’t understand why he robbed his friend. 正:I can’t understand his robbing his friend. 2. I understand him to be in Paris. 正:I understand that he is in Paris. I understand him to say that he would come. 正:I understand him as saying that he would come. A:They are going to get married. B: I understand so. / So I understand. I can’t make myself understood in English. They looked at one another. Look at the sky! It’s going to rain. Look at the girl jump. We looked at the children playing football. (3) 汉语常说“看看是否……”,但在英语中,look后习惯上不接if或whether引导的从句;遇此情况,可用look to see if [whether],其中的不定式to see… I’m looking whether there’s any food left. 正:I’m looking to see whether there’s any food left. We’re looking forward to seeing him again. The children are looking forward to your visit. The letter we looked forward to came yesterday. 此句 we looked forward to 是修饰 the letter 的定语从句,其前省略了用作宾语的关系代词 that, to 后的动词 came 是主句谓语,而不是介词to 的宾语。 2. That looks an interesting book. The sea looks quieter now. She looked embarrassed. He looked in good health. (2) it looks 后可接 as if 从句。如: He looks as if he needs a good wash. It looks as if he won’t arrive in time. 在口语或非正式文体中,可用like代替as if。如: She looks like she’s dreaming. He looked (to be) tired. That coat is starting to look worn. He’s afraid of looking foolish in front of all his friends. She’s looking so much older. You’re looking tired. Why not take a holiday? 但是,当 look 后跟 like 或 as if 时,一般不用进行式。
